What is CET?

CET stands for “Common Entrance Test.” It is a standardized entrance examination conducted at the state level in India. Each state conducts its own CET for admission to various undergraduate programs such as engineering, medical, pharmacy, agriculture, and other professional courses offered by colleges and universities within the state.

CET exams are typically held once a year, and they assess the candidate’s knowledge and aptitude in subjects relevant to the chosen field of study. The syllabus and exam pattern for CET may vary from state to state, but they generally cover subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and English, depending on the specific course being applied for.

The CET scores are used by colleges and universities in the respective states to determine the merit and eligibility of candidates for admission to undergraduate programs. CET exams are an important pathway for students seeking admission to state-level institutions and are often considered alongside the national-level entrance exams like JEE Main, NEET, and others.

Here are some of the Key Features of CET:

  • State-Level Examination: CET is conducted by state governments or their respective examination boards for admission to undergraduate programs offered by colleges and universities within the state.
  • Multiple Courses: CET is not specific to a particular field of study. It is conducted for admission to various undergraduate courses such as engineering, medical, pharmacy, agriculture, and other professional courses.
  • Syllabus Variability: The syllabus for CET varies depending on the state and the course being applied for. It typically covers subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and English, as per the requirements of the specific course.
  • Merit-Based Admission: CET scores are used by colleges and universities in the respective state to determine the merit and eligibility of candidates for admission. Admission is generally granted based on the candidate’s performance in the CET exam and other eligibility criteria set by the institutions.
  • Once-a-Year Examination: CET exams are typically held once a year, usually around the same time as other national-level entrance exams. The exam dates, application process, and other related details are announced by the respective state authorities well in advance.
  • State Domicile Criteria: Some states may have domicile criteria, requiring candidates to be residents of the state or fulfill certain residency requirements to be eligible to appear for the CET exam and avail of state quota seats in colleges and universities.
  • Quota Seats: CET exams often have reservation policies for certain categories such as SC/ST/OBC, economically weaker sections (EWS), and others, in accordance with the state government’s guidelines.
  • Admission Counseling: After the CET results are announced, state authorities typically conduct centralized counseling processes to facilitate the allocation of seats in colleges and universities based on merit and candidate preferences.

When is the best time to prepare for CET exam?

The best time to start preparing for the IIT-JEE exam is ideally during Classes 11th and 12th. Here's why

  1. Foundation Building: CET syllabus primarily comprises topics covered in Classes 11 and 12 of state education boards. Starting preparation early allows students to build a strong foundation in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and English, which are crucial for the exam.
  2. Comprehensive Coverage: CET exams are known for their vast syllabus, covering a wide range of topics. Starting early provides students with sufficient time to cover the entire syllabus thoroughly, ensuring a deep understanding of concepts and topics.
  3. Practice and Revision: Early preparation allows students to engage in regular practice sessions and revision exercises. This helps in reinforcing concepts, improving problem-solving skills, and familiarizing students with the exam pattern, thus boosting their confidence level.
  4. Time Management: CET preparation requires dedicated time and effort. Starting early enables students to manage their time effectively, balance academic studies with other activities, and develop a disciplined study routine.
  5. Opportunity for Improvement: Early preparation gives students the opportunity to identify their strengths and weaknesses. They can focus on areas that require improvement and seek guidance from teachers or coaching institutes to overcome challenges effectively.
